Funeral Pro Chat Podcast #12: Toby Blackstar Discusses Funeral Customs in the Native American Communities.

Nov 12, 2015

ASD is proud to sponsor Funeral Pro Chat, an exciting and informative Podcast series for funeral directors. Now available on iTunes, the series features directors and experts discussing the latest funeral trends, news and customs. This month, we are proud to feature Toby Blackstar, a Native American Funeral Director from Oklahoma who will enlighten you about funeral customs in his community.

In this podcast interview, Toby speaks with Steven C. Turner about the history of the unique and time honoured funeral traditions of the Native American tribes of Oklahoma, how those beliefs have evolved and how they differ from the beliefs of other Native American tribes. Toby is a representative of the the Kiowa and Comanche tribes of Oklahoma and the Comanche National Funeral Home in Lawton, OK. His experience serving different Native American tribes in his area have helped him to develop a deep understanding of the many diverse tribal customs and tenets.

Listen now to hear Toby and Steven discuss the rituals associated with Native American burial rituals, the differences between tribes and Toby’s personal experiences working in funeral service.

“The only thing the Native American tribes have a problem with is that whenever somebody dies at home without a caregiver, the body will be taken to the morgue or medical examiner and then an autopsy is performed. This really hurts the family because they would prefer the body to be whole rather than to be cut or disturbed.”-Toby Blackstar

Funeral Pro Chat was created to inform and enlighten funeral professionals on a range of subjects that interest them.
