ASD’s Favorite Pastime Series: Mortuary Science Graduate, Courtney VanFossen

Mar 06, 2014

Name: Courtney VanFossen

Funeral Home Name: Courtney just completed her mortuary science education at Northampton Community College and is currently looking for an internship at a local funeral home.
Location: Lehighton, PA
Photo Description: Courtney standing by her vehicle before competing in an Asphalt race event.
Favorite ASD Feature: “One day I hope to own my own funeral home and I will most definitely use ASD as the answering service,” Courtney says. “I really love that the company helps get the word out about our profession.”
Favorite Pastime: Courtney’s hobby is local asphalt racing. She is a 6-time winner in Women’s Asphalt racing. Racing is a shared passion between Courtney and her husband, who were married on a Friday so that they could make it to a race the next day. Their children’s birth dates were planned out to prevent them from falling during the racing season. Courtney loves the racetrack but retired from driving after an accident left the car she was driving demolished. Now, she helps out her husband who has been racing for more than 15 years as his pit crewmember.
“I can probably rebuild a transmission or a Chevy small black in a day,” Courtney says. “My racing days are over, but will always be there to help my husband out.”
On becoming a funeral director: “I have always wanted to be a Funeral Director and the people at the track we race at have known that for a long time now,” Courtney says. “They are like our family. If something happens to one of us, we all suffer. I have had great support from our fellow racers to help me achieve the dream of Funeral Directing. When I was ready to bury my head in the sand from being overwhelmed with school and family they made sure I was keeping on track.”

Courtney will be taking the National Boards soon and is actively looking for an internship at a funeral home. ASD would like to wish Courtney the best of luck in achieving her dream of becoming a funeral director and to thank her for allowing us to feature her pastime in our blog this month.
